Hearing God's side of the conversation is much more than just audio. He reaches into my soul to communicate. God wants to hear it all, everything. He says to call on him so that he can tell me incredible things that are beyond my understanding (Jeremiah 33:3) That's a pretty cool invitation to have a talk, if you ask me.
There are many examples in the Bible of God audibly speaking to people. Like good ole Moses getting to hear God in the form of a burning bush! (that would soooo get my attention) In my experience and what I've heard from others, God likes to talk to everyone differently. He reaches people in ways that are on a personal level. For me, I've heard him speaking through friends, in the lyrics of a song, words of an author, or the heart of a preacher. When my heart is connected to God, I can hear him loud and clear.
Then there have been those times that I have literally heard His voice. Moments where my eyes fling open and I quickly scan the room expecting someone to be standing in front of me. Those have been precious, cherished moments and difficult to describe. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about a time He spoke to me like that. I was off on a tangent about something and while I shut-up for a moment to gather my next thoughts, in a very real voice, I hear:
"I love you. You're doing great."
Eyes fling open.
whoa. that. was. God.
Recently, as I started out my quiet time in prayer, I was ranting about a situation I wanted God to change. Seriously, it was one of those, "I'm desperate for you to fix this, Jesus" kind of prayers. Then I begin my reading and here is a snippet of the devotional for that day:
Don't waste energy regretting the way things are or thinking about what might have been. Start the present moment-accepting things exactly as they are-and search for My way in the midst of those circumstances. -Jesus Calling, Sarah Young, January 22I don't believe in consequence, People, that is Jesus talking. And, just in case I didn't fully grasp His immediate response to my prayer, the devotional ends with my life verse:
Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths. -Proverbs 3:5,6Hearing God is a challenge, I won't lie. There is so much noise and distraction all around. Don't give up, it is possible for you to hear him speaking! We must keep our hearts connected to God and His voice will be heard.
